SKU:

Oxyuranus scutellatus canni, the Papuan Taipan, is an exceptionally large, fast-moving elapid and the most dangerous snake in New Guinea. Its venom is a rapid-acting, potent neurotoxic and procoagulant cocktail, causing severe and often fatal envenomations that require urgent medical intervention.

Key Specifications & Components:

  • Primary Toxins: Dominated by a powerful presynaptic neurotoxin (taipoxin) and potent procoagulant toxins. Taipoxin is one of the most potent known snake venom phospholipases A₂ (PLA₂), irreversibly disrupting nerve terminals.

  • Mechanism & Clinical Effects:

    • Neurotoxicity: Causes rapid, progressive flaccid paralysis, starting with ptosis and diplopia, leading to bulbar palsy and potentially fatal respiratory failure within hours.

    • Coagulopathy: The procoagulant enzymes rapidly consume clotting factors, causing a severe consumptive coagulopathy (VICC), evidenced by complete incoagulable blood and systemic hemorrhage.

    • Myotoxicity: Secondary muscle damage may occur, compounding systemic effects.

  • Potency & Yield: The venom is extremely potent, with a murine LD₅₀ (subcutaneous) of approximately 0.01 mg/kg. Combined with a very high average venom yield (often 100-400 mg dry weight from a large adult), it delivers a massive toxic load.

  • Treatment: Immediate pressure immobilization and rapid evacuation are critical. The specific Papuan Taipan Antivenom (CSL Ltd.) is highly effective and must be administered promptly. Management requires intensive care for paralysis (often necessitating intubation and ventilation) and correction of coagulopathy.
